Welcome and thank you for taking a moment to review our classic car web site. The Basil family has served the western New York area for over 70 years bringing you excellent automotive sales and service. Over the past several years, The Basil family has decided to further expand into the classic car market. We have constructed a beautiful temperature controlled classic and special interest automotive showroom at 5071 Transit Road in the Lancaster - Depew area. Our winter hours are from 10am - 4pm on Saturdays and we also show by appointment any day but Sunday, just give us a call.
When Chevrolet introduced the two passenger Corvette in 1953, Ford officials were able to see there was a developing market for these vehicles. The division manager Lewis Crusoe and design engineer George Walker decided to take on the development of a two passenger automobile but wanted to expand its interest through a broader market. For this reason, the thunderbird when it debuted in 1955 was referred to as a personal image vehicle. With its 292ci V8 engine and choice of a three speed standard or an automatic transmission, initial first year sales surprised even the experts showing 16,155 units produced and sold, compared to an anemic 700 Corvettes sold the same year. Sales continued to increase through 1956 and by 1957, the thunderbird was offered with numerous engine options, a standard or automatic transmission and an array of power options boosting sales to an impressive 21,380 units sold in that model year.
Who could forget the 1956 model which appeared in American Graffiti with Suzanne Somers at the wheel. And of course, the TV show Vegas where the red 1957 model was driven by Robert Ulrich as Dan Tanna. The 1957 model also appeared on a USPS postage stamp as well as being idolized in the beach boys song "fun, fun, fun" (till her daddy takes her T-bird away). The two passenger 1955 thru 1957 Thunderbirds are now considered to be stand-alone classics with more highly optioned models easily breaking the 100K Priceline in today's market.
This 1957 we currently have for sale is nicely optioned with a smooth running 312ci engine, an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. It is equipped with both the removable porthole hardtop and the fold away convertible top and full wheel covers. Though not pictured, this thunderbird also comes with a factory set of fender skirts as well. The chrome, engine Bay and trunk areas are in very nice condition and the interior is very presentable with the exception of the black left perimeter section on the driver's side which needs to be replaced. This thunderbird starts, runs and drives well. We have priced it at less than half of its full retail value due to its need of complete paint some floor board work and some minor body repair work on the lower passenger door and quarter area. This is an excellent opportunity for someone handy with a paint gun to do the work while driving this little bird and doubling or tripling its value when the body and paint work is completed. The opportunity to purchase a nicely equipped 1957 thunderbird with both tops at a very reasonable reduced price is a rare occurrence. Come in and have a look for yourself, if you always wanted a 1957 thunderbird but they were just out of your price range, this one is for you. Call with your questions or stop in to see this iconic little T-bird.
